Established in 1968 as a farm school 10 miles inland from Lake Erie and a half-mile off the Ohio Turnpike, Erie Huron Ottawa Vocational Education (EHOVE) has evolved in step with Northwest Ohio’s shifting economy where industrialization, healthcare, and the trades now drive opportunity. Four decades after its founding, the Board’s campus expansion and renovations re-tooled the secondary school for contemporary career development, linking students directly to local businesses and high-tech training. The design is grounded in rural Ohio’s site and context; a new connector threads updated program spaces into a coherent, student-centered heart that can grow over time, while flexible labs support pathways in healthcare and skilled trades. Freestanding sunscreens, abstracted as “bales of hay,” acknowledge the campus’s agrarian origins, casting seasonal shade and identity across courtyards and entries. Early adoption of BIM enabled rapid exploration of exterior cladding assemblies, balancing durability, performance, and cost, and informing a high-performing envelope. The result is a campus that honors EHOVE’s agricultural beginnings even as it equips the region’s next workforce, an adaptable, connective learning environment tuned to its place and prepared for what’s next.
