North High School
Eastlake, OH
On a legacy site shared with a soon-to-be-demolished 1950s school, North High School is reimagined as an internal campus, an intentional network that links adjacent learning facilities, community spaces, and the neighboring Northern Career Institute to create a seamless pathway from K–12 to college and career. Rooted in Eastlake’s suburban fabric, ranch homes, light commercial corridors, and a lakefront shaped by an industrial past. The design addresses sprawl-era access, conservation goals, and the need for robust public school offerings. A grand learning staircase anchors the student dining hall, setting the tone for a culture of collaboration that flows into an 800-seat performing arts venue and outward to varied maker, collaboration, and college support spaces. Humanities and STEM wings are distinct yet connected by an overhead bridge, overlooking a courtyard that invites learning beyond the classroom. Each wing features its own multistory collaboration stair, expressed through color cues that echo North’s signature orange and tie to district-wide wayfinding. Security and clarity of movement guide a prominent entry and site organization, with athletic fields extending the campus terrain. Material choices, tempered by budget and constructability, favor brick, glass, and metal panels outside, while warm wood tones and expressive interior finishes give the performing arts and shared spaces their identity. Despite construction logistics, BIM learning curves, and pandemic-era headwinds, the result is a resilient campus framework; a connected, flexible environment where students can earn credits close to home, explore real-world pathways, and experience a cohesive progression from early learning to lifelong collaboration.
